a very special improvisation night with a great double bill of international collaborations led by leading Portuguese musical visionaries
Thursday 18 Nov 04 7.30pm, at Purcell Room, South Bank Centre
“A nourishing and succulent musical repast”-- Jazz Weekly, USA
A superb international double bill of improv-avant-jazz not to be missed.
Portuguese pianist Jorge Lima Barreto and guitarist Vitor Rua have been playing together as Telectu since 1982 and have recorded more than 30 albums ranging from art rock, minimalism, jazz-off, modern classical and improvisation. American Sunny Murray was one of the early avant-garde's most inventive and influential drummers, doing a great deal to establish the role of the drums in free improvisation. The fourth element will be French provocateur Jac Berrocal (trombone, trumpet).
Portuguese Carlos “Zingaro” (violin, electronics) will be playing with British saxophonist John Butcher, Canadian DJ, bruit turntablist and improviser Martin Tétreault, and Swiss percussionist and electro-acoustic improviser Günter Müller.
All Atlantic Waves 2004 concert-goers will receive an exclusive CD, Exploratory Music from Portugal 04, which features exclusive unreleased recordings by many of the participating artists.
