From a musical family, Kali Z. has played piano, cello, flute and has studied voice since childhood. She traveled for 14 years, living in 16 different countries including India, Turkey, Nepal, Morocco, Senegal, Congo, France, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Yugoslavia, Haiti, Greece and America.
Kali Z. has led ensembles playing her original compositions on thousands of concert and festival stages worldwide, including New York’s Town Hall, Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum Theatre in Madras, India, and the Boston Center for the Arts, as well as performing on many radio programs and film scores.
Her performing and recording associates include Donald Rafael Garrett, Rashied Ali, Archie Shepp, Joe McPhee, William Parker, Henry Grimes, Oliver Lake, Joseph Jarman, Beaver Harris, Hamid Drake, Andrew Cyrille, Warren Smith, Bobby Few, Noah Howard, and Sabir Mateen. Kali Z. has recorded 15 albums as a leader.
