The Apollo Saxophone Quartet has set out to develop an original repertoire, combining contemporary classical, jazz, folk and world music. Dedicated to a policy of commissioning and performing new works by today’s leading composers, the Apollo Saxophone Quartet is defined by its unique repertoire and has firmly established its position at the forefront of contemporary performance. Michael Nyman, Richard Rodney Bennett, Michael Torke, Django Bates, Graham Fitkin, Howard Skempton, Dominic Muldowney, Bob Mintzer and Barbara Thompson are amongst the composers who feature in the quartet’s ever-growing repertoire of over 80 works.
A celebration of their forthcoming CD “Short Cuts” on the Quartz label, this concert features contemporary classical music from Portugal (Luis Tinoco, Carlos Azevedo, Christopher Bochmann, Joao Madureira, Mario Laginha, Pedro Moreira and Bernardo Sassetti) especially written for the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, plus music by UK composers Barbara Thompson & Joby Talbot.
All Atlantic Waves 2004 concert-goers will receive an exclusive CD, Exploratory Music from Portugal 04, which features exclusive unreleased recordings by many of the participating artists. You can hear all of these and other Portuguese music on Musa Lusa, on Resonance 104.4 FM. Broadcast live across London on 104.4 FM every Monday, 3.30-4.30pm, with simultaneous worldwide web streaming.
