Alan Silva & The Celestrial Communication Orchestra, Sunny Murray, Archie Shepp, Paul Bley, Dave Burrell, Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Dewey Redman, Anthony Braxton, Don Cherry e por aí adiante, mais outros nomes importantes da electrónica e das vanguardas, como Musica Elettronica Viva, Gong, Daevid Allen, Robert Wyatt, etc, fazem parte das escolhas de Byron Coley e Thurston Moore para esta compilação de temas de álbuns da BYG/Actuel, gravados em Paris, entre 1969 e 1971. O melhor do free jazz daquela época está reptresentado em Jazzactuel.
Pode ler-se nas notas à compilação: "(…) There's no denying that the Actuel series is one of THE great cultural can-openers of the post-war era ... it will neatly peel the top off of your scalp and pour in a steaming load of freedom, and that is a procedure which is above reproach."
