Pi Recordings is proud to announce the long-awaited new release from Henry Threadgill Zooid: This Brings Us To, Volume I, his first CD in eight years! Featuring his long-time band Zooid, the release has been praised by The New York Times as a "... deep and enigmatic album, serene and funky, radiant with purpose". This highly anticipated release is Threadgill's first since 2001's Everybodys Mouth's a Book (Pi01) and Up Popped the Two Lips (Pi02). He has spent that time, the longest period between releases in his career, creating and perfecting a new system of group improvisation. In his compositions for Zooid, Threadgill provides a framework for the musicians to interact in a way that allows for personal exploration, all tied together with complex rhythms that never lose their sense of groove. It's obvious that each member of Zooid – Threadgill on flute and alto saxophone, Liberty Ellman on acoustic guitar, Jose Davila on trombone and tuba, Stomu Takeishi on acoustic bass guitar, and Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums – has achieved a thorough mastery of Threadgill's singular musical language.
