Joseph Hayden's The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross is one of the most emblematic musical creations of the Age of Enlightenment. More than 200 years later, its spiritual message and expressive power are as vibrant as ever. This richly varied sequence of eight slow movements maintains a powerful mood of stirring intensity and fervor. For this, their second traversal of the work on CD, Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations traveled to the little-known site of its first performance (1786) – the Santa Cueva Church in the Spanish city of Cadiz, at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula. The result is a spacious and moving recording, which intersperses the spoken Biblical quotations in Latin between the musical movements. The generously illustrated booklet includes specially commissioned meditations on Christ's words by two leading figures of modern spiritual thought: theologian Raimon Panikkar and Nobel Prize-winning author Jose Saramago [alia vox]. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Last_Words_of_Christ
