Dewey Redman
(17.05.1931 – 02.09.2006)
«WKCR Jazz presents a memorial broadcast in remembrance of Dewey Redman this Monday, September 4 from 2 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Born in Ft. Worth, Texas, Redman was a tenor saxophonist perhaps best known for his work with Ornette Coleman; the two had known each other since childhood and performed together frequently in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A formidable presence in many musical styles, he has also recorded with Paul Motian, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Pat Metheny, and extensively with Keith Jarrett.
Redman was known not only as a first-rate soloist, but as a prime interpreter of Ornette Coleman's music and a gifted composer in his own right. He is survived by his son, prominent tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman». RIP.
“What I reach for first when I play is sound. Technique maybe, but there is technique in sound.” – Dewey Redman
